Chuck Norris Facts

OK, we can mark Pump*It*Up off the list.

February 22, 2006

Yesterday, Daniel didn’t have preschool because it was President’s Day. Andrew still had Parents’ Morning Out, so I was trying to come up with something fun for Daniel and I to do together.

I decided we’d try out Pump*It*Up which other parents have raved about. And it fit some of my other criteria, too — it’s cheap, full of jumping and running and other stuff to exhaust a spazzy preschooler, and the place is near lots of good shopping that Mommy wanted to do.

We arrived right before the session started and entered the play area along with a stampede of other wee ones as well as a few school kids who really probably didn’t belong in there. As I was fumbling around trying to put our shoes and coats in the cubbies and to locate my cell phone just in case the PMO tried to call, Daniel looked over the place.

He immediately found one of those read and yellow cars that you sit in and push yourself around. I’m thinking, great. All the other little kids are running towards the giant, inflated slides and bouncy houses. What does my kid do, he starts pushing himself around in the little cart, managing to run into some dad’s legs while I’m still fumbling in my bag for the cell phone.

Oh, I forgot to mention that the first thing he said when we got into the room was, “Mommy, I want to go. home. now!” in his best Caillou-imitation. I told him that we were at least going to look around and maybe try a couple of things, hoping he might warm up.

After I made him get out of the little car (because someone else wanted a turn), we did walk around, but it was all kind of overwhelming. It was really loud, just with everyone who was in there, but there was also a radio that they had playing really loudly, as if these kids needed any more hyping up.

Finally, after a few minutes, he said, “Mommy, I’m scared.”

I didn’t really blame him either.

So, we left, retrieving my $5 on the way out.

Oh well.

He did get to go shopping with Mommy, though! What more could a kid want?

And we stopped for lunch at McD’s which he loves.

under construction.

I’ve been tinkering with my list of links, but am not quite through categorizing / recategorizing. If you think that you’ve been wrongly categorized, let me know. ;)

Also, I’ve been using Blog*lines for reading, so I was noticing that there are several blogs that are in Blog*lines, but haven’t made it to this list, so if you don’t see yours listed here, it should be coming.

A good book.

I just finished Girl Meets God by Lauren Winner, who as it turns out now lives in my town. And she has a blog.

Who are you?

If you could list 10 things about who you are (nouns, I think) or that describe the different parts of you, what would they be?

I will now attempt to answer my own question:

1. a person striving to grow closer to God and stronger in her faith (I put this instead of just saying “Christian” because the word just calls up too many connotations that are negative)

2. a frazzled mommy to 1-year-old and almost-three-year-old boys.

3. a wife — friend to my husband. He’s an academic, so we are more oriented towards the academic world as opposed to the business world.

4. American, in the sense that I’m a product of the American culture. It’s who I am whether I agree with the political leaders or not.

5. Southerner — again, I’m not attaching a lot of pride to this, not that I’m ashamed of it either. But I’m still shaped and influenced by the culture that I’ve lived in for most of my life.

6. I’m a daughter to a mom who was 40 when she had me, was initially married to someone who turned out to be gay (not my father), had some college with a major in music, and worked as a mathematician at NASA a long time ago. I include those details because I think those experiences made her who she is and was as a mother. I’m a daughter to a father who trained as an architect after doing lots of different things including a stint in the army. I was Daddy’s little girl.

7. a friend to many, mostly other moms.

8. a member of different communities like playgroups, mom’s clubs, our church, the town we live in, etc.

9. Former lawyer — whether I like it or not, my training has shaped who I am and the way I see things in part.

10. Student — I excelled in school more than in any other facet of my life. I majored in art history, but my strength were probably more in the sciences/math.

Anyway, not sure where I’m going with this, but if you make your own list, put a link the comments. :)

Well, I did ask.

Is caring what people put when they don’t know what else to choose? ;)

Holy crap.

I got caught in the Valentine craziness tonight. The Dollar Store was packed, and the Valentine section at the Wal*mart was packed, too. Not finding what I was looking for, I went on to Tar*get hoping to hit the $ section for little Valentine’s day stuff for the kids. I don’t know if I’m getting more paranoid in my old age or what, but I feel increasingly manipulated by retailers. Targ*et had cleared out the Valentine’s Day stuff in the $ section. There was none. There was Easter stuff, but no Valentine’s stuff and I know they hadn’t sold out of all the pink spatulas and heart-shaped mini-baking dishes. Nobody had touched that stuff since like two months ago after it was first out. But, see, if the dollar stuff isn’t there, then you go looking for other stuff, other stuff that is more expensive than the dollar stuff. And then the Valentine’s stuff will probably show up again this weekend on clearance.

Lt. G.W. Bush, Captured in Bronze

Friday, February 10, 2006

excerpted from the Washington Post

Presidents are often memorialized in their most famous moments — George Washington crossing the Delaware, Theodore Roosevelt at San Juan Hill.

Now President Bush’s time in the Texas Air National Guard has been immortalized in bronze. The National Guard Association of the United States yesterday unveiled a bust of a young Lt. George W. Bush. The association expressed its pride in Bush, who is perhaps its most famous alumnus around today.

This is what was running through my head in the middle of the night last night. Over and over and over. I love Beyonce and all, but what’s up with that?

Add to my “S/He’s such a tool.” list . . .

February 6, 2006

Just watching Scott McClellan’s press conference from the White House. Does he really believe the stuff he says? I know he’s just doing his job and admittedly, it’s a pretty hard job. I worked for a boss whose decisions and positions I didn’t agree with some of the time and yet, had to advocate for them in public. *rolling eyes* I hated it. I wonder if that’s how he feels.

But, I mean, where does he get off chiding these ancient, well-respected journalists like Helen-what’s-her-face? It reminds of an adage in the practice of law — argue the law; if the law isn’t good for you, argue the facts; if the facts aren’t good for you, pound the table. i.e. tspeak with righteous indignation. How dare they think that your position is incorrect?! Heh.

Anyway, so for anyone keeping count, here’s my list of people worthy of the “tool” appellation:
1. Tom Cruise
2. Scott McLellan, W’s press secretary
